Chattahoochee
River: Follows Hwy 75 thru Helen, GA. This stream is stocked heavily on a weekly
basis at several access points on the Chattahoochee WMA. A good wild rainbow trout
population is present along with a few browns. Some of the small tributaries have some
native brook trout. There are some primitive camping areas near the stream and commercial
campgrounds and Unicoi State Park are also close. The river below the management areas is
also heavily stocked each week, but much of it is on private land. Unicoi Outfitters offers
fishing for the novice and expert alike. Whether you fish for trout, bass, catfish or
"the big one". A fisherman's paradise - we have private trophy streams, area
pristine lakes, and rivers including the famous Chattahoochee River, all set amongst the
foothills of the pristine N.E. Georgia Mountains. Professionally guided fly fishing trips
come complete with the use of fishing tackle and waders, casting lessons, transportation
and lunch. For more information call 888-966-4040 or click here for details: http://www.unicoioutfitters.com
Smith Creek: State Rd 356 off of route 75, north of Helen. This is a
small stream that is stocked weekly during the trout season. It flows through Unicoi State
Park, where lodging camping and conference facilities are available. A very popular and
scenic area. Allow time on your trip to climb .4 mile up to Anna Ruby falls, a twin
waterfall cascading 150 and 53 feet in twin falls.
Unicoi Lake: 44 acre lake with bass, bream, and some trout. |

The
Appalachian Trail
The
Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a wilderness footpath that winds over 2100 miles
along the crest of the Appalachian mountains. Stretching from Springer Mountain in Georgia
to Katahdin in Main, the trail passes through fourteen states, 8 national forest, and 2
national parks. Hikers are responsible for the upkeep of the primitive shelters and
trailside campsites, located 7 to 8 miles apart. The Trail was originally established by
hiking enthusiasts in the 1920's and 30's and it became one of the two initial units of
the National Trail System established by the U.S. Congress in 1968.
The
Appalachian Trail in Georgia extends some 80 miles through primitive areas of the
Chattahoochee National Forest. Although rising at times to elevations of over 4400 feet,
the Trail is mostly along the ridges at elevations around 3000 feet. It offers unlimited
hiking adventure of exceptional challenge and variety. Ascents and descents are sometimes
steep , but are often rewarded by scenic vistas from rocky outcrops and open summits.
The
Trail's southern terminus is located atop remote Springer Mountain, near Forest Service
Rd. 42. Since this area is difficult to reach by automobile, an 8.5-mile blue-blazed
"approach trail" begins at Amicalola Falls State Park on GA 52. Outstanding
scenic peaks along the Trail include Big Cedar , Blood , Cowrock, Rocky, and Tray
Mountain. one of the many side trails leads from Chattahoochee Gap to the highest point in
Georgia, Brasstown Bald. Bly Gap on the Georgia/North Carolina
border is the northern end of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia.

Trail Wilderness. Blazes will be farther apart on the wilderness portion of the trail.

Rock
Mountain Trail
Length: 1 mile
This blue-blazed trail climbs gradually from Forest Service Road 283, Indian Grave Gap
Road, to the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) on the side of Rocky Mountain. A 3.5 mile loop trail
can be made by combining the A.T., Rocky Mountain Trail, and Forest Service Road 283.

Grave Gap Road, graveled Forest Service Road 283. At 1.5 miles, pass the parking lot for
