October it hosts several Super Star Concerts starring nationally known country music
stars.
The Reach of Song
Georgia's Official Historic Drama, is held June through August, at the Clegg Fine Arts
Center on Young Harris College Campus. In song, dance, stories from the whittler's bench
and gossip from the quilting bee, the drama presents the rich cultural heritage of the
Southern Appalachian mountains before, during and after World War II.
Young Harris College
hosts a number of cultural events throughout the year, including theatre presentations,
art exhibits, music shows and Rollins Planetarium shows.
The
Chattahoochee
National Forest
and parts of four wilderness areas are host to a multitude of flowers and wildlife. Lake
Chatuge, a 7500 acre TVA reservoir, is a haven for fishermen, skiers and boaters. Marinas
and public boat docks provide easy access to the lake. Rent a boat, a pontoon, a small
boat, or even a canoe to help you enjoy the scenic beauty.
Sports
enthusiasts can also enjoy mountain biking, tennis, horseback riding, swimming at a
lakeside beach, or golf at one of the top ten rated courses in the state.
Brasstown
Bald
Take
GA75 south toward Helen from Hiawassee. Turn right on GA180 (look for signs) Go
approximately 5 miles. Entrance is on right. Georgia's highest mountain rises 4,784 feet
above sea level. On a clear day you may see four states. The Visitor's Information Center,
located at the summit of the Bald, houses an exhibit hall with interesting displays and a
slide show of the seasons in the mountains. A very steep, paved one-half mile trail leads
to the Visitor's Center. The Center is open daily from Memorial Day through October and on
weekends in early spring (depending on the weather.)
Facilities
include picnic tables, concession building, craft shop, restrooms, four hiking trails
(ranging from five to six miles in length), the Brasstown Wilderness which offers a wide
diversity of flora and fauna, and plenty of parking. "The Bald" is operated by

Hamilton
Rhododendron Garden
Located
at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds one mile west of Hiawassee,GA. Look for the sign on
the right inside the fairgrounds and follow road to top of the mountain.
The
rhododendron garden is beautiful any time of the year but it is particularly so in the
spring when the dogwoods, azaleas, rhododendrons and spring bulbs are in bloom.
Rhododendrons are at their peak the last of April and first part of May. Two thousand
varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas grace a pine bark trail overlooking Lake Chatuge.
The
Hamilton Rhododendron Garden is open every day year round and there is no charge to enter.
The Garden was started by Fred Hamilton and his wife Hazel. The Hazel Hamilton yellow
azalea was named after her. The Garden is maintained by the Georgia Mountain Fair.
High
Shoals Waterfalls
- Take GA 75 south from Hiawassee for about 9 miles. Just past GA 180 on the left is a low
sign that says "High Shoals." Travel 1.4 miles to the High Shoals Scenic Area. A
succession of five falls graces this 170 acre scenic area. An abandoned road climbing the
mountainside affords access from which pedestrians can strike off at several levels and
descend to the respective waterfalls. There is an estimated total vertical drop of 300
feet. It is well worth the effort to see these dramatic falls. Hall Creek Falls, and Cupid
Falls are worth the trip. There are many small falls on the hiking trails.
Tate
City
- Take US 76 east from Hiawassee going toward Clayton. It is approximately 17 miles. Turn
left on county paved road for seven miles.(Sign says "Persimmon Valley.") Turn

City."

city was once a busy corundum mining community and later a logging town with store and
churches. Now only two churches and a handful of homes remain. Most of the original
mountain people are gone. The area is best known now for hiking, picnicking and camping.
The Tallulah River runs through Tate City and has been the site of TV commercials,
postcard vistas and a movie. Many of the streams entering the Tate City valley have
waterfalls.
Appalachian Trail -forms
